Ex-Rapper Luther ‘Luke’ Campbell Finishes Fourth in Miami-Dade Mayoral Race

Former Hialeah Mayor Julio Robaina and ex-Miami-Dade County Commissioner Carlos Gimenez appear headed for a June 28 runoff in the special election to replace Carlos Alvarez, who was ousted from office on March 15 in one of the largest recalls in U.S. history.

With all 829 precincts reporting, Robaina unofficially had 62,770 votes, or 33.7 percent, to 53,761 votes, or 28.8 percent, for Gimenez.

Former state Rep. Marcelo Llorente, who placed third in the 11-candidate field and had conceded early in the evening that he wouldn’t be making the runoff, had 27,682 votes, or 14.8 percent, while former rapper-turned-columnist Luther “Luke” Campbell, the one-time front man for 2 Live Crew, garnered 20,652 votes, or 11%.

No other candidate in the crowded field polled as much as four percent of the vote.

  1. Pretty decent showing… he could probably get himself elected to a city council seat.

  2. I agree. Campbell’s showing was all the more impressive considering he only spent about $12,000, a tiny sliver of what the major candidates in the race spent.
