In the aftermath of last week’s dismal jobs report, showing that the U.S. economy created far fewer jobs than economists expected while unemployment inched up to 9.2 percent, nearly two-thirds of the American people believe the country is headed in the wrong direction.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll released earlier today shows that 63 percent of Americans — a three percent increase since June — believe that the country’s economic policies aren’t working.
The poll found more than half of Americans believe the economy is the country’s most pressing problem — the first time a majority has listed it as the country’s biggest challenge since February 2009, shortly after President Obama took office — yet voters do not appear to be holding the president responsible for the nation‘s sputtering economy.
Despite the unexpected rise in joblessness, the President’s approval rating dropped only one point since June.
The poll of 1,173 adults was taken July 8-11 and had a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
