Poll Shows Gary Johnson Makes NM a 3-Way Race in General Election

Gary Johnson

A new poll being teased by Public Policy Polling apparently shows that New Mexico would be a competitive 3-way battle between GOP nominee Mitt Romney, President Obama and potential Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson.

PPP tweets: “Gary Johnson polls at 23% in New Mexico as a Libertarian against Obama and Romney”

Johnson is a popular former governor of that state and is polling third in the GOP primary there.  Rumors have been swirling that he would make an announcement sometime today that he was dropping out of the Republican race to seek the LP nomination.

A 23% showing in New Mexico for the general election back in 2008 would have netted a candidate about 190,000 popular votes — well over a third of the total 523,000 vote that Libertarian nominee and former Congressman Bob Barr tallied nationwide. In fact, Barr finished fourth in New Mexico will little more than 2,000 votes.

Johnson clearly gives the Libertarians their best chance of ever capturing electoral votes and adding a third color to the election night map.
