Political Dynasties Hope to Grow in Today’s Elections

jimmy-carterMichelle Nunn hopes to win a U.S. Senate seat in Georgia today, the state her her father Sam Nunn represented for 24 years.  She faces Republican David Perdue, who is the first cousin of former Georgia governor Sonny Perdue.

With 2016 looking like a possible showdown between Hillary Clinton and Jeb Bush, there’s been a lot of talk about the good and bad of political dynasties in America.

There are a lot of very familiar names, representing some of the country’s most famous dynasties, who will be on the ballot today. They are the sons, daughters and other relatives who are looking to build their family’s next generations of office holder. In fact, three dynasties with presidential connections will be watching tonight’s results with great interest.

  • JASON CARTER: President Jimmy Carter’s grandson is a Georgia State Senator who is locked in a tight race to become the next Governor of the Peach State. Jason is the son of Jack Carter, who unsuccessfully sought a U.S. Senate seat in Nevada back in 2006.
  • BOBBY SHRIVER: Bobby Shriver is President John F. Kennedy’s nephew and the former mayor of Santa Monica. He’s currently locked in a tight race for a seat on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. So far, according to fundraising figures, his opponent has raised more than $4.7 million, nearly three times the $1.65 million raised by Shriver.
  • GEORGE P. BUSH: George P. Bush is the son of a former Florida Governor, Jeb Bush, and the nephew of one president and grandson of another. The younger Bush is a 38-year-old Fort Worth attorney and energy consultant who is running for Texas Land Commissioner. He has raised more than $3 million against his little-known Democratic opponent, former El Paso Mayor John Cook.
