Ron Paul ‘Money Bomb’ Falls Short

Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul took in more than $1.1 million in an online “money bomb” as of Monday morning, falling short of his campaign’s stated goal of $2 million, but matching what the conservative Texas congressman brought in during a similar “money bomb” on May 5, the day of the first GOP presidential primary debate in Greenville, South Carolina.

According to Paul’s web site, the libertarian-leaning congressman had raised $1,109,552 shortly before 10 a.m. on Monday.

Dubbed “The Revolution vs. RomneyCare: Round One,” Sunday’s online fundraising effort was aimed at frontrunner Mitt Romney and his “bailed-out banker buddies on Wall Street.”

Paul, who garnered just 6 percent in the latest ABC News/Washington Post Poll, specifically targeted Romney in Sunday’s appeal for funds. “Other campaigns are already hitting high gear — or should we say they are hitting up the fat cats. In fact, establishment candidate Mitt Romney raised $10 million in one day a couple of weeks ago from well-heeled party bigwigs and Wall Street insiders,” he wrote in an e-mail to supporters.

  1. Sorry, it did not fall short. Who else is having these fundraisers or is even attempting them. One million dollars in 24 hours is very note worthy and speaks to the amount of support that Ron Pauls message of sound money, and personal freedom has. You ain’t seen nothing yet !!!

  2. This is seriously your headline? How about stating the fact that he raised 1.1 million dollars in a single day as your headline? What other candidate (besides Romney and his banker friends) can do this? By the way, the ‘stated goal’ was not $2 million. That is just how the donation tracker was set up – it was the same for the Money Bomb on May 5.

  3. The Paul campaign didn’t announce a goal. The ticker on the Paul website was set at $2 million to encourage contributions. Find us a _statement_ from the Paul campaign setting a $2 million goal, or publish a retraction. By the way, how much did any other candidate raise on Sunday?

  4. “Falls short”? Wow, way to turn a great piece of campaign news into a slam. And of course, now that ABC has this new number, and it’s a low number for Paul, let’s quote that and ignore the other two recent polls that show him at 10 and 12 percent. Has anyone else, besides Romney, raised $1 million in a day recently?

  5. No kidding. Nobody stated a goal. Way to hack a story.

  6. It’s June 2011. Ron Paul hasn’t begun to campaign! He is going to bring out the big guns this election cycle. The headline reading, “falls short”, is true since the campaign aimed for $2 mil, but this is definitely a big win for Ron Paul and his supporters. Other candidates are looking at this total and realizing the impact Ron Paul is going to have on the next election cycle. No other candidate is raising this sort of money or excitement. If the Republicans are smart they will choose Ron Paul to defeat Obama!

  7. I received several emails prior to the moneybomb and not a single one of them had a “stated goal” nor ever mentioned “2 million”. They used the same ticker (which should be changed so people don’t assume the end goal) as on the last one, which just happens to end at 2M.

Is this just another attempt to marginalize Ron Paul?

Can you show a quote from the campaign where they said the goal was $2M ?

  8. Romney never raised 10 million. He raised 1 million with a “pledge” for the additional funds. Yes folks this is the type of accounting you have to look forward to with Romney.

  9. I love how the press does this. His goal was 1 million dollars. NOT 2 million!

Constitutionally, legislatively, and morally, Ron Paul has no equal. His 22 year voting record speaks for itself.
Mr. Paul has not survived in politics for 22 years and maintain the ethics and morality he has by being anything other than stellar.
If You refute the above comment, then I please invite You to listen to him speak about key issues. It is amazing how well he comes across because he doesn’t have to remember lies like other politicians. He understands what is happening in the world and knows how to apply the basic principles of liberty to achieve the real change that America so desperately deserves.
American to American we are all on the same team. So I present Mr. Ron Paul as my Candidate for 2011 and invite anybody to meaningfully and respectfully debate why he is not the best for American and its people in 2012.
Ron Paul = A real change, not for special interest, but for America’s Interests!
    Thank You for Your time
    Ron Paul 2012

  10. The $2MM wasn’t a goal! Only what the webdesigner used as the high number on the scale’s axis!!!!!!

  11. Your Comments

It seems journalism is getting a lot like meteorology – you can count it being 50% right.

Nice try…over 1 mil is A LOT of under 100.00 donations! No other candidate has this kind of support!

  12. Ron Paul’s goal was 1 million, which he exceeded. You slanted media types will NOT overshadow Ron Paul this time around. At his first debate, the audience CHEERED and APPLAUDED every time he made a statement.

    EVERY

    TIME

    HE

    MADE

    A

    STATEMENT.

Ron Paul 2012!!! Our efforts to bring back honesty and integrity to the White House will not be dismissed this time around!

  13. 2 million was NOT the goal, it’s just what the ticker on the site goes up to. It’s almost a guarantee that a RP Moneybomb will exceed $1 million so it leaves enough space to show all of the money collected. Also, repeating the point of a previous commenter, Dr. Paul has consistently been polling above 10% which puts him well in the running for the top spot. Choosing the one poll that attempts to express otherwise is dishonest, to say the least.

  14. Funny how the author’s website link goes to an empty website with an ad for eyeglasses.

I think this says something about a person who would publish this kind of lie. The campaign never stated a goal.

In addition, this was NOT a campaign event. It was a grassroots bottom up event, organized by the people for the purpose of helping Ron Paul’s campaign.

In the case of the recent money raising by Romney, it was a top down event organized by Romney.

  15. I’m on Paul’s email list and never did I see a “stated goal” of $2MM.

The big news is that a $1MM+ haul is a heck of a good day for the Paul campaign.

The even bigger news is that the money is coming alot earlier in the nomination process in 2011 than it did for Paul in 2007.

Of course, it remains to be seen how effectively the campaign can translate fundraising into reaching the masses with their message, but it’s hardly falling short of goal to this point.

  16. The ticker was set up to show progress, 2 million was never a goal. Why stop short at 2 million? We will keep raising money. Why aren’t you publishing the sources of the donations? Dr. Paul is not beholden to PAcs or corporations or special interests. People, citizens, peopel form around the world support him, why not do a comparison piece between Dr. Paul, Mitt and his wall street pledgers and Obama and his Hollywood liberals and socialist PACS? A little true journalism for a change of pace?

This is just more media bashing and psy ops to subconsciously mold and form opinion into who the big corporations, i.e. your owners and masters, want in the field and to discredit the one who threatens them with the truth, with an understanding of a way out of this mess, who is principled and unwavering in his stauch constitutional beliefs and practices. WHo has walked the walk for 30+ years and not just talked the blah blah blah.

Ron Paul is unbeatable, don’t vote for a party, vote for America, vote Dr. Paul to restore this nation.

  17. Pure grass roots, purely brave ordinary Americans donating money, and an article that dismisses a valid, real, and vital movement.

I did not enjoy this article and no-way will I share it.

Darcy, you need to figure out what side your on. Articles that distort (i.e. show where Ron Paul’s campaign stated 1) THERE WAS A GOAL 2) IT WAS 2 MILLION

very unfortunate that puny sites like this bother to even cover Ron Paul if they are going to act like MSM goats…

Romney will de de-story himself in one month… He is a flipper, a fraud, and a job killer… go ahead and bet on him…. your going to loose, and WE are going to win this time.

    Dr. Ron Paul 2012!!!!!!!!!!

  18. Poor Darcy, I feel for you. The money Bomb was a huge success. As Joe said you’re just trying to turn a great piece of campaign news into a slam. You career as an author is doomed by you ignorance, if the donations counter pegged out at 1 million bucks how would we know how much he actually earned. Maybe you could be a sport a relay to the world “unlike the Obama and Romney who receive most of their money from special interest, Dr. Paul get’s his money from the people”

Good luck with life you will need it…

  19. I’m disappointed in this snippet. He exceeded his goal of $1 million.

Also, Romney didn’t receive $10 mil cash-in-hand. It was “promised” to him.

  20. LOL!! The man takes in more than a million dollars in one day for the second day in two months and you give us ‘falls short’ as a headline? There was no specific goal, there was just a money line. It had a $2 million incentive, but it wasn’t billed as a ‘two million dollar money bomb’, they just needed to have markers somewhere to measure promise.

When he needs more, he’ll get it.

  21. This piece is so… wrong. As a veteran of the ’08 campaign, the measure of support is based on numbers of followers. And I can already attest that he has a heck of a lot more followers and credibility now than he did in June of 2007. Heck, I remember in Ames Iowa when we had to have our own counter rally because nobody deemed him relevant to participate in the debate. Those days are over.

This was an impromptu volunteer retaliatory bomb to the Romney campaign’s $10 million drive. A better measure of success than $2 Million mark is how many donors he had compared to Romney.

And that’s thing–the core base is already larger than last year, and the veterans from last year are experienced at this now. The old base of support from the original money bombs have our own little culture and even sort of traditions now. I will be pitching in my Megadonation on November 5th. I only pitched in $20 this time. This is comparative seed money.

  22. Same old tricks. Everyone move along. There is nothing to see here except for a statist grasping for straws. A note to the author of this obviously biased and misguided article. We are winning the minds of the people. You and everyone like you may want to decide what side you stand on. On the side of freedom or under the foot of your masters?

  23. This was the funniest thing I’ve read in a while. At least I hope this was a comical piece. Romney got 10 million in pledges, NOT 10 million cash that much i do know and if I were a betting man I’d say they came from celebrities, bankers, corporate interests and wall street brokers. Ron Paul got 1.1 million cash from real people.

  24. Ron Paul is the only choice for change from the current Democratic/Republican regime.

His intellect, honesty ethics, and consistency are beyond compare among politicians.

    Ron Paul 2012!

  25. Your Comments
Texas Rep. Ron Paul took issue with former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney’s fundraising prowess, questioning whether Mr. Romney actually raised $10.5 million on Monday.

“He actually didn’t raise (that amount),” Mr. Paul said during a trip to Nevada. “I think he got $10 million in commitment. When our chart runs on the (website) ticker, it means the money’s in the bank.”
    http://www.thestatecolumn.com/articles/ron-paul-questions-mitt-romney/

Rep Paul raised MORE actual funds than the rest – again (fact check?)
    Long live the rEVOLution baby!

  26. Darcy Richardson fell short!

  27. Get a grip on reality and look for another profession because reporting through your foggy lens probably won’t cut it for you.

Ron Paul is out performing EVERY GOP contender with his boots on the ground and fundraising.

  28. Falls short? Is this hack writer for real? Hitting and exceeding the goal of $1 MILLION in one 24 hr period is “falling short”?

    This is a joke, right?

  29. Dan Bowkley says:

Seems to me that most media has a definite, leftward slant these days. So if the media wants to keep its liberal president in office, it would work tirelessly to ensure two things: that liberals vote Obama and that conservatives end up with a choice between Obama and a total moron who happens to be conservative. Therefore it’s in liberals’ best interest to suppress any conservative (or Libertarian or otherwise) opposition and pretend to almost support someone like Romney.

Don’t fall for it. This is liberal media brainwashing at its finest. Which, honestly, is pretty pathetic. Let me know when you can debate actual issues, compare apples with apples, or maybe even suggest a way out of this global economic cluster***k.

  30. This is the only story to headline “Ron Paul Fell Short” of a stated goal.First, there was no stated goal, and 2, $1.2 million is not falling short. I am convinced the RHINO’s and cross-over democrats who nominated the “War Hero” will cause Romney to be nominated. Its time that Paul make it clear he’s running whether or not he is nominated by the Republicrats. 2012 is ripe for a new party candidate and Paul is the most qualified and electable. Paul can run without the usuala baggage carried by the Republicrats.

  31. Oh brother. No stated goal? The graphic he put up everywhere had “$2 million” as the target to be hit.

C’mon — it clearly was a dud. Just admit it.

  32. I thought the article was a joke until I read Austin F’s comment. Now I realize that certain members of the human population truly are capable of being that profoundly stupid.

    Absolutely fascinating.

  33. Darcy’s website is gone along with her brain.

  34. “In fact, establishment candidate Mitt Romney raised $10 million in one day a couple of weeks ago from well-heeled party bigwigs and Wall Street insiders”

The BANKSTERS are backing ROMNEY. The clowns that crashed our economy and received government bailout money are backing this guy. That in itself is good enough reason not to take him seriously or vote for him.

  35. Ron Paul IS MY President!! Run Ron Run!!
The campaign fliers and yard signs are up already on his website, get yours now, I did!! I am putting a real estate flier holder out front of my house since I’m on a corner property and hope to get people walking by to take one. Plus going dooor to door etc……
    http://www.RonPaul2012.com

    Ron Paul 2012!!

  36. Nice hit piece Darcy. Why didnt you mention that Michelle Bachman had a moneybomb a week ago and raised $164k lol. Ron Paul has raised over $3.5 million thus far this year. We will see if Romney really raised $10 mm when the numbers are released later. There are questions how how valid those numbers are.

    • Looks like Romney actually raised just 7.5 million. Impressive but 25% short of his braggart press releases of 60 days ago. Romney is finished. Perry is making hash of him. Paul is the big winner and will most likely be the nominee. If not, Paul will run as a Libertarian candidate and take 30% plus of the electoral votes. This will place the election the House and the Republicans will give their votes to Paul to make him the 45th POTUS.

  37. Well, Darcy G. Richardson, your readers who commented have spanked you so thoroughly, don’t you think you should offer a retraction, or an apology?

At least make a pretense to having learned something here.

  38. Just skimming through these responses is enough to give someone a headache.

    “THERE WAS NO GOAL!!!”
    “THE GOAL WAS ONE MILLION!!”
“THIS WASN’T EVEN A CAMPAIGN EVENT IT WAS ALL GRASSROOTS!”

People call Ron Paul supporters crazy because of mass responses like this, yeah I’ll say it, cult-like reaction you’ve all just had to a story that was plainly accurate.

  39. Everyone who is attacking Darcy for saying that Mitt Romney raised $10 million in one day should READ THE DAMN STORY again!

    It’s a QUOTE…

    Q-U-O-T-E

    from R-O-N P-A-U-L…

Ron Paul said Romney raised $10 million, NOT Darcy.

Try learning how to fucking read, sometime.

  40. Dear IndyInAsia,

Read the story and identify one thing that was inaccurate. Romney raising $10 million in a day? CAME FROM THE MOUTH OF RON PAUL.

The goal wasn’t $2 million? Every other time someone has done a money bomb or fundraising drive with a graphic and a thermometer to measure the progress — the top number on the thermometer is the GOAL. They got about half-way there.

It was a grassroots effort.. nothing to do with the campaign? Paul was out there working it to turn out donors… and it was ON THE FRONT PAGE OF THE CAMPAIGN’S WEBSITE.

You can go thorough spank yourself to some more pictures of Ron Paul.

    I hope you’ve learned something.

  41. “Darcy G. Richardson is the author of six books, including five volumes of a planned seven-volume history on independent and third-party politics in the United States.”

Hopefully, she put more investigation into these works than what she did for this poorly written article.

  42. Your Comments

When the shortfall is equal to your journalistic integrity – then he’s in trouble.

  43. Chuch Curtis says:

Yet another example of Establishment media bias, which is one reason why Ron Paul is so popular — to tear it down. Keep up the motivational stories.

  44. Simply not true. This article is patently dishonest.

  45. Over 2 million in the month, that’s good this early on. How are the other candidates doing? Mitt received 10 million in pledges, not cash, there’s a big difference.

  46. Wayne Lander says:

must suck to attempt to do a failed self-fulfilling prophesy on Dr. Ron Paul. The movement is gaining momentum, in spite of the establishment’s establishments efforts to minimize the campaign. The Ames’ Iowa Straw Poll results, now The Ron Paul birthday moneybomb raking in over 1.5 Mil$ in 24 hrs. Oh how it sucks to be wrong. Even former Obama supporters are jumping on board. 🙂
