White supremacist gadfly and former “presidential candidate” John Bowles has registered to represent the American Nazi Party as a lobbyist on Capitol Hill.
“Of course I won’t approach anybody in Congress unless it’s a very interesting issue or law,” Bowles promised U.S. News and World Report. “I’m going to be very careful about the issues I choose for this.”
Bowles was a declared candidate for President in 2008, but failed to qualify for the ballot in any states. One of the areas he hopes to lobby on is ballot access, though it seems a safe bet that if he accomplishes anything with this publicity stunt it will be to encourage stricter requirements not only to get on the ballot, but also to become a registered lobbyist.
Currently associated with a group calling itself the American Nazi Party, Bowles has a history of bouncing from tiny splinter group to tiny splinter group over the years, telling Wikinews in 2008: “I was an official supporter of the National Socialist White People’s Party (currently known as the NEW ORDER) from 1974 through 2004. In 2004, I switched to the National Socialist Movement (NSM) and served as its National Election Director and held the rank of Captain until October 19, 2007, when the National Socialist Movement officially split because NSM Commander Jeff Schoep wasn’t supporting my candidacy and was sabotaging the election campaign, plus displaying bad character that was becoming known publicly. Honorable NSM members left and formed the National Socialist Order of America (nsoa88.com). I currently serve as the National Election Director for the National Socialist Order of America and its 2008 Presidential candidate as well.”
