WATCH: Sanders is ‘Thinking About Running for President’

Independent Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont is openly exploring a run for President, likely as a Democrat in 2016.  Appearing on Meet The Press today with Chuck Todd, Sanders was very clear about his interest.

“I am thinking about running for president,” said Sanders.  “Running as a Democrat — that’s something that I’m looking at right now.”

Sanders, who caucuses with the Democrats in Congress, would like try to position himself as the progressive alternative to Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primaries.   His first stop is a trip to Iowa to test the waters for a possible 2016 run.

When pressed on the issue of running as an Independent or as a Democrat, Sanders said he had not ruled out the idea of running outside of the Democratic Party.  However he cautioned that the task of setting up a 50 state operation to achieve ballot access was daunting.  In the past, he has also expressed concern about playing the role of a “spoiler” in a close general election.

  1. Oct09neil s because they beeilve Johnson only gets votes from people who would otherwise vote republican, so it costs Romney and helps Obama. It’s a pragmatic argument. I think there are much better arguments for why libertarianism in general is nonsense, but they are more concerned with winning the election.

  2. I’m impressed by your writing. Are you a professional or just very knowledgeable?
